In short
Shopify is the most proven hosted store builder in the world, with an unmatched app ecosystem and a checkout that converts. For Malaysian sellers there's a catch: Shopify Payments isn't available here, so you must connect a third-party gateway like iPay88, Billplz or Curlec — and on the Basic plan Shopify still charges its own 2% third-party transaction fee on top of that gateway's ~2-3%. That can mean roughly 4-5% all-in on a card sale, and your plan is billed in USD. JomJual is built for Malaysia: free to start with no monthly fee, a 5% platform fee capped at RM99 a month, only when an order succeeds, and local payments — FPX, DuitNow QR, Touch 'n Go, GrabPay, Boost, cards and COD — built in, plus EasyParcel shipping with auto AWB labels. You still own your customers, data and domain. If you sell internationally at scale, Shopify wins. If you're selling to Malaysians, JomJual keeps more margin in your pocket.

Shopify
RM 265/mo
est. 2% + RM 165/mo
About RM 166/month (RM 1,992/year) you’d keep with JomJual at this volume.
Basic plan billed in USD ($39/mo ≈ RM165, or $29/mo billed annually); excludes the separate MY payment-gateway fee (~2-3%) you still pay on every order. Gateway fees may apply to both. Estimate only — your actual costs vary.
What does it really cost to sell in Malaysia?
JomJual
Free to start — no monthly fee, and no card needed to sign up. You pay 5% of the item subtotal — never more than RM99 in a month — and only on a successful order; that fee is simply withheld from your payout. If you don't sell, you don't pay a sen. Everything is priced in ringgit, so there's no FX surprise and no USD invoice to budget around. And that fee comes with the full platform — page builder, four themes, product variants, inventory, vouchers, reviews, and a finance and payout dashboard — plus EasyParcel shipping and local payments built in, not bolted on as paid add-ons.
Shopify
Shopify plans are billed in USD. Basic is US$39/mo (about RM165, or US$29 billed annually), the mid Shopify plan US$105, Advanced US$399. Because Shopify Payments isn't available in Malaysia, you also pay Shopify's third-party transaction fee — 2% on Basic — on every order, on top of your gateway's own ~2-3%. On the Basic plan, a card sale can cost roughly 4-5% all-in before you even count the monthly fee, and exchange rates can move that RM cost around.
How do your customers actually pay you?
JomJual
FPX (14 banks), DuitNow QR, Touch 'n Go, GrabPay, Boost, Visa and Mastercard, and cash on delivery are all built in via Curlec/Razorpay, with payment tracked automatically per order in your dashboard. There's nothing extra to wire up and no separate gateway approval to chase before you can take your first order — your Malaysian buyers simply pay the way they already pay every day. It works the same on your subdomain or your custom domain, and payouts flow into the finance dashboard so you can see exactly what's settled and when.
Shopify
Shopify supports local methods only through third-party gateways — Billplz, iPay88, eGHL, Razer (MOLPay), 2C2P, Curlec or Stripe MY. Each one needs its own merchant account and approval, and connecting any of them triggers Shopify's third-party transaction fee. It works well once it's set up, but it's more configuration, more approvals to wait on, and more cost per sale than a built-in local payment stack designed for Malaysia.
Who owns your customers and data?
JomJual
You own your customers, their data, and the relationship outright — full customer-list export, your own subdomain (yourstore.jomjual.my) plus a custom domain, and your branding across the whole storefront and checkout. Buyers come back to your store, not to a marketplace feed sitting next to your competitors. You control the look with the page builder and four themes, and you can reach customers directly for repeat sales, vouchers and reviews. Nothing about your store or your audience is locked to a platform you can't walk away from with your data intact.
Shopify
Shopify is also yours to own — this is a genuine shared strength. You keep your domain, your customer list (exportable), and your branding, unlike a marketplace. On ownership, Shopify and JomJual are closely matched; the real difference between them is cost and local fit, not who holds your customer data. If owning the relationship is your only concern, both platforms serve you well.
When does each one actually win?
JomJual
JomJual wins when your buyers are in Malaysia. Local payments and EasyParcel couriers are built in with auto AWB labels and real-time tracking, pricing and payouts are in ringgit, and a no-code setup gets you live in about 5 minutes. You keep more margin on every sale because there's no monthly fee and no stacked gateway-plus-platform charge. The storefront and dashboard run in Bahasa Melayu, English, Chinese and Tamil, and a small local team replies fast at hello@jomjual.my — so support understands FPX, DuitNow and Malaysian shipping out of the box.
Shopify
Shopify wins at global scale. The largest app and theme ecosystem anywhere, the proven Shop Pay checkout, and Shopify Markets for multi-currency, multi-country selling are hard to beat. If you're selling worldwide, need deep third-party integrations, or want a vast pool of agencies and developers to build on, Shopify is the stronger platform — USD billing and the extra gateway fee included. For a global, complex catalogue, that trade-off is often worth it.
Choose Shopify if…
- You sell internationally and need multi-currency, multi-market tools like Shopify Markets.
- You depend on a large ecosystem of apps, themes, and third-party integrations.
- You want the most proven, highest-converting checkout (Shop Pay) and don't mind USD billing.
- You have a big or complex catalogue and an agency or developer to build it out.
Choose JomJual if…
- Your customers are in Malaysia and pay with FPX, DuitNow, Touch 'n Go, GrabPay or Boost.
- You want to start free and pay only 5%, capped at RM99 a month, when you actually make a sale.
- You'd rather price and get paid in ringgit, with no USD bill or FX surprises.
- You want local payments and EasyParcel shipping built in, and to be live in about 5 minutes.

Questions & answers
Is Shopify Payments available in Malaysia?
No. As of June 2026, Shopify Payments isn't available to Malaysian merchants. That means you connect a third-party gateway — like iPay88, Billplz, Curlec or Stripe MY — to accept FPX, DuitNow and e-wallets. And because you're not using Shopify Payments, Shopify also charges its own third-party transaction fee (2% on the Basic plan) on every order, on top of whatever the gateway itself charges.
Is JomJual really free, with just 5%?
Yes. There's no monthly fee and no card needed to sign up. You pay 5% only on a successful order, and it's withheld from your payout automatically — if you don't sell, you don't pay. That 5% — never more than RM99 a month — is the platform fee, full stop: no separate subscription and no USD bill. Shipping with EasyParcel is paid as you use it, the same as on any platform.
Can I move my store from Shopify to JomJual?
Yes, and it's straightforward. Export your products and customer list from Shopify (it lets you download both as CSV), then recreate your store on JomJual in about 5 minutes, switch on local payments and EasyParcel, point your custom domain over, and go live. Place a quick test order first to confirm checkout and payout. If you'd like a hand, email hello@jomjual.my.
What does Shopify do better than JomJual?
Plenty, honestly. Shopify has the largest app and theme ecosystem in e-commerce, the proven Shop Pay checkout, mature multi-currency tools for global selling, and a huge community of developers and agencies. If you're scaling internationally or need deep integrations, Shopify is excellent. JomJual's edge is being built for Malaysia — local payments, ringgit pricing, local couriers and fast local support.
